and paying a $20 fee. Once you receive your Parent Taught Packet and your student has received their learner’s license or permit, you may begin XLR8 Behind-the-Wheel Driver’s Education.
Parents/Instructors cannot have a Driving While Intoxicated conviction or a conviction of criminally negligent homicide. The parent/instructor must have less than 6 points on their Texas Driver’s License. It is the responsibility of the parent/instructor to check their criminal record and driving record before requesting and paying for the packet. The Department of Public Safety and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation will not check the parent/instructor’s records prior to issuing the Parent Taught Packet.
Teens:
Students may begin the program once parents have requested a parent taught driver education program guide - https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/misc/PTDE%20Manual%202021%20FINAL%20hyperlinked%20TOC%20OSC.pdf
Once this has occurred, students log into their accounts at http://www.xlr8drivingschool.com, print off the activity booklet, and click on Module 1. They participate in the readings and activities. Upon completion of Module 1, parents should log the date in their student’s booklet. Students may begin each new module no earlier than the following day. Parents will begin recording grades after Module 1C. There will be quizzes at the end of Modules 1C-12. There are adaptations or modifications present within this program:
- Throughout each module, students will participate in “Check for Understanding” quizzes. These quizzes are simply present to ensure understanding of smaller components of the lessons. If students score less than 70%, XLR8 Driving School recommends that students revisit the preceding mini-lesson.
- Text-to-Speak options are available on nearly every slide. Students may have pages read and re-read to ensure concept understanding.
- Extra time – students have up to a year to complete the work necessary to obtain their license!
- Added white space – fonts are larger and more “white space” have been included to help so many students avoid overwhelming feelings too often associated with typical programs
The XLR8 online modules should not be completed in less than 16 calendar days.
Students will participate in Modules 1-12 online. Once students have completed Module 1A, B, and C, they can take the handbook test online with us! Students will be emailed their completion certificates (DE 964) by next business day. Students do have the option to receive their certificates without testing but will need to email us at info@centraltexasdrivingschool.com to request the form. Students can then take that certificate along with the following items to their local DPS office to test for their Learner’s License or Driving Permit.
- Initial DE-964
- Certified copy of student’s birth certificate
- Original Social Security Card
- VOE (Verification of Enrollment in school. You can request this form from your high school office.
- 2 Proofs for Residency (30-90 days old; ex: electric bill, water bill, insurance card, voter registration card, CHL). The bills should have the name of the parent taking them to the DPS to get their permit.
- Application Fee
Once students obtain their learner’s license/permit, they may legally begin driving practice with someone 21 years or older who has had a license for a minimum of 1 year. They will drive with you, the parent for their 14 hours of instruction. Once the permit is obtained, they may begin the behind-the-wheel portion of driver’s education, concurrently.
Parents should print off 2 PDF booklets and documents once the program is ordered. One booklet contains the XLR8 curriculum and the other is a supplemental document to aide in completing the state required 30 hours of additional drive times. The documents at must be filled out prior to taking the driver’s license test.
A DE964 completion certificate will be emailed to you. You must notify XLR8 Driving School if your email address changes.
Adults:
Adults may begin the program once enrolled. Each section is timed and security questions are spaced through out. Students should answer the security questions carefully as a completion certificate (ADE 1317) will not be awarded if less than 70% of the security questions are answered incorrectly. Once the 6 hour course is completed and the handbook test passed, an official certificate will be emailed within 2 business days (Monday - Thursday).
Students must first attend the classroom only program at a commercial driving school or public driving school at their local high school. Students should then go to their local Department of Public Safety and obtain their learner’s license (permit). Once the permit is obtained and they have completed the classroom only portion of driver’s education, they may begin XLR8 Behind-the-Wheel.

Teens:
The classroom component of Teen Driver’s Education should take no less than 16 days but can take no more than 1 year. If students need more than one year to complete the program, they must re-enroll and pay the required fees. Parent taught behind-the-wheel lessons can be completed in no less than 44 days. Students may record up to 1 hour of practice or observing per day. This does not mean they can only practice one hour a day, however! We want our Texas teens driving as much as possible!
Adults:
Adults can finish Driver Education in as little as 6 hours but have up to a month to complete the requirements online. If students need more than a month to complete the program, they will need to re-enroll and pay the required fees.
